This morning, firefighters were dispatched to the 1100 block of North Heald Street and the University and Whist Club to respond to two separately reported fires.

Firefighters on the “C” platoon responded to the 1100 block of North Heald Street, a working house fire with flames showing on the first floor. The firefighters and responding units contained the fire to the first floor with only minor damage to the second floor. Fire damage was confined to the dwelling of origin; however, the neighboring property experienced minor smoke damage.

Shortly after the Heald Street fire, firefighters were dispatched to the University and Whist Club, when a passing EMS unit from Saint Francis Hospital noticed and reported a fire in the rear of the building. The fire was located at the loading dock and storage area attached to the rear of the social club. Responding units quickly controlled the fire and prevented any extension into the main building. However, the main building did receive minor smoke damage.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported in either fire. The Wilmington Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of both fires, and the investigations are active and ongoing at this time.
