On June 18, 2013, Sophia Hanson, Director of the City’s Department of Planning and Urban Design, travelled to Windhoek, Namibia to present at the 2013 International Public Management Conference.
The conference focused on the planning, economic growth and sustainable development of communities worldwide. Situated in Southern West Africa, and bordered between Angola and South Africa, Namibia was named by Bloomberg News, in 2013, as the top emerging market economy in Africa and the 13th best in the world.
“Namibia provided the perfect location for a conference designed to stimulate discussion on ways to promote economic and physical development,” said Hanson.
As an experienced City Planner, Hanson presented on innovative planning techniques that incorporate the ideas and input of both the business community and the citizenry. Other notable presentations made at the conference included the United States Ambassador to Namibia, Wanda Nesbitt. Her Excellency spoke on investments made in countries to create a better future versus aid that only meets the needs of the day.
Consistent with the theme of empowerment, a presentation was made by the Millennium Challenge Corporation, an organization created in 2004 with a primary mission to reduce poverty worldwide through sustainable investment.
“This was my third visit to Africa, but by far her most informative and productive,” said Hanson.
