Get involved. Become a bike enthusiast. Get involved. Become a bike enthusiast.

The Wilmington Bicycle Advisory Committee (WBAC) was created to advise and coordinate bike-related initiatives in the city as well as advocate for bicycle transportation and recreation opportunities. WBAC welcomes bike enthusiasts of all skill levels to get involved. Committee members actively participate in events like the Wilmington Grand Prix, Bike-to-Work Day, bike surveys, bike infrastructure installation, the Bike Summit as well as supporting various local bike charity and non-profit organizations.

The strength of our committee comes from strong citizen participation. The committee also has the support of numerous City departments including Parks and Recreation, Planning, Police, Public Works, and the Office of the Mayor. Additionally, we have representation from WILMAPCO, Bike Delaware, the Delaware Bike Council, DART and DNREC – all of whom we see as partners in advancing bike initiatives.

Please contact Mike Leventry at bikewilmington@WilmingtonDE.gov for more information on getting involved and/or to receive meeting notices.

    Bike Wilmington Events

Take a look at some of the events sponsored by Bike Wilmington and the Wilmington Bicycle Advisory Committee.

    WBAC Initiatives

    Outreach:

The Wilmington Bicycle Advisory Committee, also known as Bike Wilmington, again had a presence during Wilmington’s 2013 Bike Week. Festivities included several group public riding events, a BBQ and racing.

Read the Wilmington Bike Week event summary.

    Transportation Enhancement Grant:

WBAC/Bike Wilmington has successfully attained a $200,000 DelDOT Transportation Enhancement grant to implement bike infrastructure improvements within the City of Wilmington.  The effort will address four (4) primary corridors that will serve to connect the City’s neighborhoods to the downtown commercial district.  Additionally, the Committee will be working with its consultant McCormick Taylor, DART, Wilmington Initiatives and the Challenge Program to develop a cutting edge, multi-modal bus shelter prototype that will serve the needs of transit riders and bicyclists.

Download the corridor improvement concept map.

    Bike Loops and Cruises:

These rides are modeled after similar community rides that occur frequently in Portland, Oregon. The cruises involve meeting up with other bike enthusiasts and riding as a group in a roving fashion to different locations in and around Wilmington. The bike loops, which happen on Art Loop Fridays, are organized groups of riders that visit various Wilmington art galleries to check out their offerings. For more information, email bikewilmington@WilmingtonDE.gov

    Bike Parking and Sharrows:

WBAC/Bike Wilmington has been coordinating and assisting the Department of Public Works to determine logical and safe locations for bike parking (racks) throughout the City. Phase I of a City-wide rack install effort is complete; phase II is under research and development; and a final phase is set to occur next Spring. Sharrows have been installed on Market Street with more sharrows to follow in the near future. If you are aware of a location that is in need of bike parking, please contact Mike Leventry at mleventry@WilmingtonDE.gov.

    Brandywine to Christina Trail Connector:

NREC Secretary Collin O'Mara has declared that connecting the Brandywine and Christina waterfront trail systems is a priority. The WBAC/Bike Wilmington concept has a multi-use trail following the Brandywine Creek down from the Brandywine Park and around the 7th Street peninsula and connecting with the Christina River waterfront trail. WBAC/Bike Wilmington is on board coordinating with WILMAPCO, DNREC, DELDOT and Bike Delaware to support planning and development.

    Pedal Perks:

Under development is a Pedal Perks program which will partner with bike friendly businesses to offer and advertise incentives to bicyclists that ride to their establishments. It is meant to incentivize biking while supporting the local economy. More information will follow as the program is more fully developed.
