Mayor Williams Announces Bobby Cummings as Chief of the Wilmington Police Department

Mayor Dennis P. Williams today announced the appointment of Bobby L. Cummings as Chief of the Wilmington Police Department. The mayor selected Cummings after conducting a nationwide search that yielded more than 50 applicants from across the country.
“Bobby’s leadership, experience, and strong community ties make him uniquely qualified for this important position,” said Mayor Williams. “We interviewed a number of candidates with impressive credentials, and Bobby easily stood out. He is the best person for the job, and I look forward to working with him in the years ahead to provide increased safety to the citizens of Wilmington.”
Chief Cummings is a 29-year veteran of the Wilmington Police Department and most recently served as the Interim Chief of Police and Inspector of Uniformed Operations. During his tenure, Chief Cummings has worked in almost every area within the police department, including assignments in the Special Operations Division, Crime Prevention Unit, the Criminal Investigations Division, and the Drugs, Organized Crime and Vice Division as an Undercover Officer. He began his law enforcement career as an Officer in the Patrol Division.
“I’d like to thank Mayor Williams for the honor and opportunity to serve the citizens of Wilmington as the next Chief of Police,” said Cummings. “The men and women of the Wilmington Police Department represent what’s best in law enforcement, and I am excited to work with them on forging stronger ties to the community in an effort to make our city safer.”
Chief Cummings has received numerous awards and commendations throughout his career. He was named the Kiwanis Police Officer of the Year in 1990, and he won the Leonard Kittner Award for being the Best Rookie Officer of the 76th Police Academy Class. Chief Cummings is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, and he earned his Master of Science in Human Services from Springfield College, where he also received his Bachelor’s degree and presently serves as an Adjunct Professor.
Born in Millen, Georgia and raised on the West Side of Wilmington, Chief Cummings is a proud graduate of Claymont High School. He is married to Simone Cummings and together they have one daughter and two grandsons.
Mr. Cummings will begin his tenure as the Chief of the Wilmington Police Department on Friday May 30th.
