Summary:

A suspect armed with a handgun surrendered to police after discharging a handgun several times within a Mendenhall Court residence.

The incident occurred shortly after 4:00 a.m. Sunday morning as officers responded to a 911 call reporting a man with a gun inside of a residence in the 2900 block of Mendenhall Court. As officers arrived on scene they heard multiple gunshots from inside the residence. The officers immediately established a perimeter and notified the Crisis Management Tactical Team (CMTT). Several minutes later the suspect, Hassan Muhammad, exited the residence, discarded a silver handgun, and surrendered to police. While being taken into custody Muhammad attempted to resist arrest by kicking at officers. Members of the CMTT cleared the residence and found it empty.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the victim allowed Muhammad to enter the residence shortly before 4:00 a.m. For undetermined reasons, Muhammad displayed a handgun and threatened the victim, who fled from the residence and contacted police. Muhammad then discharged several rounds into the door of a closet containing a hot water heater. The hot water heater sustained severe damage, flooding the residence and a neighboring apartment.

Hassan Muhammad is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to prior felony drug and weapon convictions. He remains at Wilmington Police Headquarters pending arraignment.
