A convicted felon prohibited from possessing a firearm was arrested with a handgun after officers stopped him for riding a bicycle at night without a headlight.
Officers Andrew Shaub and Jose Vasquez were on patrol in the 200 block of South Broom Street when they observed Marvin Dejesus-Santiago riding a bicycle without a headlight. When the officers attempted to stop him, Dejesus-Santiago fled on the bicycle for several blocks before dropping the bicycle and continuing to flee on foot. Dejesus-Santiago then discarded a loaded .380 caliber handgun before he was taken into custody by the pursuing officers.
While in custody Dejesus-Santiago provided a false name to officers. At Wilmington Police Headquarters he falsified a court document by providing additional false information. An investigation revealed Dejeus-Santiago’s true identity and that he has prior violent felony convictions that prohibit him from possessing a firearm.
Marvin Dejesus-Santiago was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 20 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $44,010 cash bail.
