Afternoon Building Fire in Wilmington

TIME: 3:23 PM

This afternoon at 3:23 p.m., Wilmington firefighters on the B-Platoon were dispatched to the 700 block of East 4th Street for a report of a building fire. Upon arriving, Fire Department units reported smoke was showing from the two-story apartment building on Allen’s Alley off of East Fourth Street.

Fire suppression companies began an aggressive interior attack while simultaneously searching the building and apartments for trapped occupants. All occupants were found to have exited the building prior to the Fire Department’s arrival.

The fire was placed under control at 15:43 hours by the Incident Commander, Deputy Chief Michael Donohue.

One firefighter was transported to Wilmington Hospital with a minor injury sustained while fighting the fire. No civilian injuries were reported. The building sustained fire damage to one apartment unit with smoke damage throughout the building. Five residents have been displaced and three residents (2 adults & 1 child) are receiving housing and recovery services from the Red Cross.

The Wilmington Fire Marshal's Office responded to investigate the cause of the fire. The fire investigation is active and ongoing at this time.

Approximately 27 fire and EMS personnel responded to the fire. The following units responded: Engine 2, Squad Engine 1, Squad Engine 3, Engine 5, Ladder 1, Battalion 2, Battalion 6, Battalion 10, Deputy 2, FM13, Ambulance PA2, Wilmington PD, Wilmington License & Inspection, Delmarva Power, and the Red Cross.
