City of Wilmington Launches 2014 Senior Fan Drive

Today, the City of Wilmington begins the 2014 Senior Fan Drive, where senior citizens who cannot afford or do not have access to a fan or air conditioning system can receive relief and combat the rising temperatures of the summer season.

“What may just feel like a warm day to some, can be life threatening to our seniors or those with respiratory ailments,” said Jill Morrison, Director of Constituent Services. “Hopefully these fans can provide some relief to members of our senior citizen community.”

The annual Fan Drive serves senior citizens and individuals with respiratory problems to ensure they have the necessary resources to fight the summer heat. Dangerously high temperatures can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, or more severely, heat strokes.

“As summer approaches and temperatures rise, we must take care of our seniors and those in need by providing fans and the necessary resources so they can safely and comfortably beat the heat,” said Mayor Dennis P. Williams. “I would like to thank our Office of Constituent Services for working with community partners in supporting our efforts to offer comfort and support to our seniors during this upcoming summer season.”

To qualify to receive a fan, applicants:

  1. Must reside in the City of Wilmington.
  2. Must provide a driver’s license or state ID showing that their address lies within City limits. (If the license or ID does not show a current address, they may bring a utility bill.)
  3. Must be 65 years of age or older.

Fans must be picked up between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday in the Office of Constituent Services, located on the 3rd Floor of the Louis L. Redding City/County Building, 800 North French Street.
