Police Make Gun Arrest after Foot Chase

Summary:

Officers Neil Evans and Michael Barrett were patrolling the unit block of East 23rd Street when they observed a black Ford Crown Victoria sitting idle on the block. As officers drove by the vehicle, they observed the passenger, Diamere D. Wright, lean back in his seat attempting to avoid visual contact with the officers. After observing this action, officers placed the patrol car in reverse and headed back towards the Ford Crown Victoria. While doing so, the driver of the vehicle, Lettommy Ballard, exited the vehicle and fled on foot through an alleyway. Wright exited the vehicle and began to casually walk away. Wright was taken into custody without incident. Ballard was taken into custody after a failed attempt at jumping over a fence. While checking Ballard, officers located an automatic handgun between his legs and waistband.

Wilmington Police’s Gun Squad Unit executed a search warrant on the Ford Crown Victoria and located a silver and black revolver handgun.

Ballard, who is a person prohibited, was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Facility in lieu of a $20,000.00 secured bond.

Wright, who is a person prohibited, was committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Facility in lieu of a $20,000.00 cash bond.
