This morning, teachers at P.S. DuPont High School found an unloaded handgun in the backpack of a 13 year old student.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:50 a.m. when students told their teachers that they had observed the defendant walking to school with a handgun. The defendant did not make any threats towards other students or staff. When the students arrived at class they notified their teacher who contacted the school administration.

The defendant, who coincidentally was already in the administration offices, was approached by staff who searched his backpack and located the handgun. The staff immediately contacted police who responded to the school. An initial investigation indicates that the defendant brought the handgun to show off to friends and believed that the handgun was actually a BB gun. The defendant did not make any statements or threats indicating that he intended to use the handgun. There are no other students involved in this incident and this does not appear to be a gang related activity. The Firearms Squad is investigating how the defendant came to be in possession of the handgun.

School activity was unaffected by this incident.

The defendant was transported to police central where he is being held pending arraignment.
