Wilmington City Council President Theo Gregory and 8th District Council Member Charles “Bud” Freel, on behalf of all Council Members, joined with Mayor Dennis Williams today to formally thank Wilmington residents, community centers, businesses, churches and schools for performing community projects throughout the City during Wilmington’s Community Project Day (CPD) held earlier this month.
The event on May 4 marked the third consecutive year that hundreds of citizens planned and carried out community projects in the City. Projects included new or improved community landscaping and gardens, tree plantings, as well as street and neighborhood clean-up and beautification projects. This year’s event drew more than 500 residents who completed more than 70 projects.
The annual event is sponsored by the City of Wilmington with special support from the Public Works and Planning Departments, Office of Constituent Services and City Council, along with invaluable contributions of materials and funding from The Home Depot, ShopRite, Kenny Family Foundation, Veolia Water and the Neighborhood Planning Councils. Special thanks are also extended to volunteers from Public Allies, the YMCA Black Achievers and the University of Delaware which the Planning Department paired with civic groups and non profits to assist with various projects.
The City hosted a community appreciation cook-out in Freedom Plaza at the Louis L. Redding City/County Building soon after the projects were completed on May 4. ShopRite and the Kenny Family Foundation provided food and refreshments as CPD volunteers had an opportunity to relax and met neighbors from around the City. The Delaware Humane Association was also on hand to talk to City residents about their animal shelter services, as was Recyclebank which provided information about Wilmington’s curbside recycling program. Each of the groups that participated in WCPD also received a printed certificate of appreciation from the City.
Council President Gregory, Council Member Freel, who originated the event, and all Members of Council join with Mayor Williams in expressing their appreciation and thanks to all of the volunteers and sponsors for making the 3rd Annual Wilmington Community Project Day an outstanding success.
