Industrial Accident With Two Injuries

Wilmington Fire Department was notified of an Industrial Accident at the above location. On arrival, members of the New Castle County Tactical Rescue Team were already on scene. There was a prior report of the accident made listing the occurrence in the County jurisdiction. On arrival, Deputy Chief Michael Donohue took command of the operation. The accident occurred when there was a mechanical failure on a crane that caused a piece of equipment (a crane block that weighed approximately 2300 lbs.) to fall approximately 30 feet brushing both workers on the way down. The workers were working on a platform assembling a crane tower and were approximately 40 feet off the ground. After the contact, both workers self-extricated themselves from the platform and climbed down to the ground. The victims were treated by EMT’s and Paramedics from New Castle County, and transported to the Christiana Trauma Center by Minquadale Fire Company Ambulance A-22 and St. Francis Ambulance PA-4 for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The situation was placed under control at 1:35 p.m. by the Incident Commander, Deputy Chief Michael Donohue.

Twenty-two (22) fire and EMS personnel responded to the rescue. The following units responded: SB-2, Deputy 2, Battalion 3 Ambulance PA4, NCC Paramedics, Minquadale Fire Company A-22, Rescue 22 and Brandywine Hundred Fire Company Tower 11.
