Shortly after 4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 20, 2013, Harry Hyland contacted the Wilmington Police Department and reported that his child had been abducted.
Hyland told police that he parked his vehicle in the 500 block of North Market Street and left the vehicle momentarily with his 11 year old stepdaughter inside. He returned after less than one minute later to discover the child missing.
Extensive resources of the Uniformed Services and the Criminal Investigations Divisions were rapidly dedicated to the search and investigation of the child’s disappearance.
At approximately 5:25 p.m. investigators located the child at her grandmother’s residence in the 400 block of Bethune Drive in Wilmington accompanied by a family member. An investigation indicates that the child was at the residence all afternoon and that this is her normal after school routine. She was not with Hyland that afternoon and was never in danger.
Harry Hyland was charged with falsely reporting an incident and providing a false written statement to law enforcement. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 20 and released after posting a $3,000 secured bond.
