Police Investigate Suspicious Package, Conduct Controlled Detonation

Summary:

A suspicious package found in Canby Park was destroyed via controlled detonation by Wilmington Department of Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team members.

At approximately 8:15 this morning, officers on patrol in the 700 block of South Scott Street were flagged down by a passing jogger. The jogger informed them that she had discovered a suspicious package on a trail in Canby Park. The officers located the package, a suitcase secured with bungee cords, and contacted EOD to conduct an investigation. As a result of this investigation EOD determined that the safest way to resolve the situation was via a controlled detonation. The suspicious package was destroyed without incident. An analysis of the package following the detonation was negative for any explosives or other dangerous contents.
