Safety Tips Offered for Excessive Heat

Posted on  07/16/2013 4:45 pm

In light of the excessive heat expected for tomorrow and the next few days, City residents are urged by the Mayor’s Office and the Wilmington Office of Emergency Management to protect themselves and their families from heat exposure and heat-related illnesses.

According to the National Weather Service, the heat index over the next few days might exceed 1050degrees Fahrenheit, with Thursday and Friday being the hottest days. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity may combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible.

City residents are urged to drink plenty of water, stay in an air-conditioned environment, and stay out of the sun. Check on elderly relatives and neighbors. Make sure pets have plenty of cool water and bring them indoors. Never leave any person or animal in a vehicle for any length of time. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside; wear light or loose fitting clothing when possible. Anyone overcome by the heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke; heat stroke is an emergency – call 911.

The Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services has a limited number of new electric fans available to elderly City residents (55 or older) free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Elderly residents in Wilmington who are in need of a fan should call the Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services at 576-2489 or email
