Mayor Dennis P. Williams and Chief Christine Dunning Announce the Capture of the Suspect in the Shooting of Officer Justin Wilkers

(Wilmington, DE) - Mayor Williams and the Wilmington Police Department held a press conference to announce the arrest of the suspect who shot Patrolman Justin Wilkers.

On Sunday, February 3rd, Officer Wilkers and his partner attempted a routine vehicle stop. Suspects in the vehicle refused to pull over and led the officers on a vehicle pursuit through the Southbridge area of Wilmington. Once the vehicle stopped, several suspects fled the scene while one suspect fired a handgun and shot Officer Wilkers.

The shooter has been apprehended by the Wilmington Police Department and taken into custody where he was charged with attempted murder.

“As I stated yesterday, I will be aggressively addressing the crime problem in Wilmington. And to that end, within 48hrs through our coordinated efforts, we’ve captured the key perpetrator of this horrible crime.”

Officer Wilkers remains at the Christiana Care Hospital in stable condition and will undergo surgery today.
