Friday, May 30th, the City of Wilmington will begin the 2013 Senior Fan Drive, where senior citizens, who cannot afford or do not have access to a fan or air-conditioning system, can receive relief and combat the rising temperatures of the summer season.
The Wal-Mart Store #2555 supported this year’s Senior Fan Drive by donating $688.00 towards the fans. This Wal-Mart Store discounted the price of the fans from $16.88 to only $10.00.
“The Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services is happy to partner with Wal-Mart Store #2555 in order to provide these fans to the City’s senior population. What may just feel like a warm day to some, can be life-threatening to our older residents or those with respiratory ailments,” said Director of Constituent Services, Jill Morrison.
The annual Fan Drive serves senior citizens and individuals with respiratory problems to ensure they have the necessary resources to fight the summer heat. Dangerously high temperatures can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion, or more severely, heat strokes.
“As summer approaches and temperatures rise, we must take care of our seniors and those in need by providing fans and necessary resources so those folks can safely and comfortably beat the heat,” said Mayor Dennis P. Williams. “I would like to thank Wal-Mart for supporting our efforts to offer comfort and support to our seniors during this upcoming summer season.”
To qualify to receive a fan applicants must:
- Must be a resident in the City of Wilmington.
- Must provide a driver’s license or state i.d. which shows their address within City limits. (if the license or i.d. doesn’t not show current address, they may bring a utility bill)
- Must be 55 years of age or older OR if a resident is younger than 55 but has respiratory problems, he/she may bring in a letter from their doctor.
- Fans must be picked up between 9:30a.m. - 4:00p.m. Monday-Friday in the Office of Constituent Services.
