Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams has issued the following statement regarding the shooting that took place this morning at the courthouse located in Wilmington, Delaware on 4th and King Streets.
Monday morning at approximately 8:00 a.m., a suspect gunman walked into the lobby of the New Castle County Courthouse and opened fire. Wilmington Police, Capitol Police, Delaware State Police, New Castle Police, ATF, and numerous law enforcement agencies responded. As confirmed this afternoon, two victims were injured, and three victims were killed, one of which is the suspected shooter.
Among the injured were two members of the Capitol Police department who were working in the building this morning. The injured officers were taken to Christiana Care Hospital, where their injuries were detailed as non-life threatening.
“I am thankful for the courageous ladies and gentlemen of the numerous law enforcement agencies at the Federal, State, and Local levels that quickly responded to today’s tragedy. This is a unique incident, and this afternoon, we were informed that the victims and the suspect were entangled in a long custody battle that, unfortunately, erupted today.
“Gun violence is an issue that doesn’t receive nearly enough attention; it’s a systemic problem that affects all communities. I continue to be committed to working diligently with Federal, State, County, and Local agencies to address this issue within our city,” Mayor Williams said earlier today.
